What began as a shared feeling of nostalgia, slowly became a dream — a dream to bring the warmth, joy and spirit of Durga Pujo to our Canadian homes or neighbourhood here in Simcoe County.
 

For many of us, Durga Pujo is more than a festival. It is the fragrance of dhuno (incense smoke or fragrant incense offered during prayers) in the evening air, those 5 days of delicious food with khichudi bhog, sondesh (sweets) from Bengali cuisine, the sound of dhaak (traditional Indian drum) echoing through crowded pandals, late night pandal hopping, shopping for new clothes, late-night adda with family, cousins & friends and the comforting feeling of togetherness that defined our childhoods. No matter how far life has brought us from our home country i.e Bharat (India), those memories stayed alive in our hearts. We eagerly wait to offer our prayers on Maha Ashtami anjoli i.e 8th day and on Dashami i.e 10th day or last day of the pujo - we wait to dance with our Mom, other married women & young women from our neighborhood during sindoor khela (to play with red vermillion powder wore by married women only) & dhonuchi naach in the evening.

A few families in Simcoe County came together with the same longing — to recreate those cherished moments for our children and future generations. What started as conversations over chai or Indian tea & singada (snack - veg samosa) and shared memories soon turned into collective action. With the combined strength, dedication and enthusiasm of few of us in Simcoe county, we took the first step toward organizing the first-ever community Durga Pujo in 2026.

Simcoe Utsav Foundation (SUF) was born from that emotion — not as a charitable organization alone, but as a family away from home.

Our goal is to celebrate our rich culture, devotion, unity and with community spirit while creating a safe space where everyone feels welcomed, loved, respected, involved and connected. Through Durga Pujo, other cultural & social events, food, music and togetherness, we hope to pass on the beauty of our rich heritage of traditions to our future generations while building lifelong bonds & unforgettable memories, here in Simcoe County.

Every ritual, every decoration, every prayer, every beat of the dhaak, every laughter carries a piece of our memories and our love.

This is our effort from the heart — for our children, for our community and lastly, for Maa Durga.
